About this guide

Korean brain shows (survival games, deduction variety, escape rooms, Mafia-style web series) are one of the richest, most interconnected corners of TV. Casts recur, producers cross-pollinate, and later shows reward you for having watched the earlier ones. The trouble is knowing where to start and what order to go in. This site turns that knowledge into a map you can click through.

Source & credit

Every show, recommendation, and viewing note here is adapted from the community-maintained Korean Brain Show Guide spreadsheet ↗, written by and for the fan community. All credit for the curation and opinions belongs to its author(s). The spreadsheet itself points to further resources: the Baechu Squad website, the pinned posts on r/TheGenius, and r/koreanvariety. Its format was inspired by pokecapn's viewing-order chart.

How to read the map

On the home page, shows are laid out in stages from top to bottom. A show sits below the ones it builds on, and the lines trace the recommended viewing order. The Genius is the root of almost everything, so start there. In general, watch shows in broadcast/release order and never watch seasons or episodes out of order. The one exception is Problematic Men, which has no overarching narrative.

Legend

  • Bold titleA cornerstone of Korean entertainment; a must watch.
  • ALL CAPS TITLEA survival / reality game show with active, fierce competition and eliminations. (Normal caps usually means a variety show.)
  • Underlined titleCreated and at least initially produced by Jung Jong-yeon (JJY), creator of The Genius and the catalyst of an entertainment golden age.
  • Italic titleA future project yet to release.
  • 🤪Less "brainy" and more "zany". Watch these first and foremost to be entertained rather than enlightened.

Spoiler note: in the source guide, any show named in a bold title within a viewing note means it is spoiled (or alluded to) in the show being described. When in doubt, follow the order and you won't get spoiled.
